Brief Guide to Martial Arts Visualization

By Sensei Gene Starkey: Master Instructor, American Hard Style

American Hard Style Founder: Robert Thomas Chang

Preparation:

·         Find a place where you can relax and close your eyes.

·         Either sit or lay down.

·         Get comfortable: Loosen any articles of clothing that are tight or uncomfortable.

·         Close your eyes and take several deep breaths.

·         Notes: These are basic concepts. Modify them so you feel comfortable.

Technique:

·         Keep your eyes closed and Relax.

·         Imagine a place that is one of your favorite places. It can be anywhere, either inside or outside, but it should be a place that is free from noise and distraction.

·         Imagine yourself going there: If it is outside, then you make the last few steps to get there. If it is inside you go there by entering a room, walking up, or down, some stairs & into a room, etc.

·         Imagine yourself getting into a large easy chair, reclining chair, or lying down, in front of a large TV screen.

·         Imagine yourself getting comfortable as if you were preparing to watch a movie that is exciting and important to you.

·         Imagine yourself turning on the TV.

·         Imagine that the screen is showing you, in your martial arts uniform, preparing to do a kata, or other drill. (The setting you are visualizing could be anywhere: In class, at a testing, doing a demo in front of a crowd, or at a tournament).

·         You are confident and poised.

·         Visualize yourself performing the kata, or other drill, on the TV screen with perfection and power.

·         Following your performance see yourself brimming with self confidence and feeling a great sense of accomplishment with applause by the audience and /or judges.

Additional Notes:

·         If you have trouble visualizing yourself doing the performance use another person who has skills you admire. Then, as you become more comfortable with the visualization, you can substitute yourself for the other person.

·         If you have trouble visualizing yourself changing direction during your performance, this skill comes from repetition.

  • Special Note: Add some emotion to your exercise. Visualize yourself as winning! Big!

... said don Juan,

"There is one simple thing wrong with you ... you think you have plenty of time." ...   ... (said again) ... "You think you have plenty of time" ...

"Plenty of time for what don Juan?" ...

"You think your life is going to last forever".
